The Future of our Church – Part 4

We have been having some important discussions about the future of the United Methodist Church and Lakeview. I want to share with you a decision made by Lakeview’s Administrative Council (our governing body) at their meeting on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Following a very lengthy time of discussion, including recommendations from the Trustees and SPR Committees (for the record only), a motion was made and seconded that Lakeview continue their mission here as United Methodists and not enter into the process of disaffiliation. The motion passed without further discussion by a vote of 17 for and 4 against. May God bless our mission here at Lakeview and may His presence be felt in all we do in love.

Marion Kolb, Secretary Administrative Counsel

As we talk about the future of UMC I want to share some perspective.

We’ve had discussions & strong feelings about issues of human sexuality, homosexuality and the interpretation of scripture. As I have shared before, there will not be any official changes in the church until the next General Conference, in April of 2024.

Here at Lakeview, it is my hope and prayer that we will continue to be the same loving, caring church we have always been. I find we are a typical UM congregation with a variety of opinions. We will welcome and love whoever comes here to worship or share in ministry with us. We’ll do one more church wide meeting in April talking about we get along together as a church with different perspectives.

While I believe in a fully inclusive church, I would not see myself doing a same-sex marriage in the church. Some have expressed concerned about the possibility of having an openly gay or lesbian pastor appointed here. But nothing will change in way new pastors are appointed. The Staff Parish Relations Committee is always consulted & asked by our District Superintendent about what we’re looking for in new pastor. The Superintendent could ask if we are willing to have gay or lesbian pastor. The SPRC could agree or could certainly say we’re not there yet or that won’t fit for our church & that would be the end of discussion. My prayer now is for our moving forward and being a church focused on our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ and living our vision, to be Christ’s community in action with love for all.
