“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.”

Temptations and Consequences

Luke 8:1-3

Jesus extends his ministry of hospitality far beyond our wildest imagination. As he travels from place to place, many decide to follow him. Some experience the freedom of a new life. In all circumstances, those who decide to follow Jesus experience a change in heart. They cannot remain the same. Something beautiful happens, and they know it. The text may not explain in detail about all those who follow Jesus, but their stories are as important as those we have had the privilege to know. In this case, these women have experienced change in their lives and have chosen to follow Jesus. The text names three specific women: Mary called Magdalene, Joanna, and Susanna.

These women are not mere followers; they help and provide from their resources to follow him. As we live out our beliefs in communities of faith, we receive an invitation to collaborate in that ministry. The text says that these women help to support Jesus. How are we helping?

We tend to criticize, complain, or simply not see things clearly when we are not the ones in charge. Instead of rejoicing in the goodness of God and the opportunity to be in ministry, we blame others or whine. Christ Jesus calls us to embrace with joy all opportunities that God offers because we are in partnership with the One who redeems us. We are called to serve and serve well, with gratitude in our heart.

Prayer:

God, in our journey to be faithful, we thank you and seek your grace and mercy. Help us to grow as disciples  so that we can continue our part in proclaiming the good news. Amen.
