North Platte Nebraska, troop trains, Christmas day1941, that was when it all began. Farmers and city folks gathered together to meet, greet, and feed the troops on the train that day, and all the rest of the trains on that day, and the next day and the next day and the next day until March 1946. These folks fed 10’s upon 10’s of thousands of soldiers. Where did all of this food, money, and ration stamps come from? These were just ordinary folks, scraping by, trying their best to take care of their own families. Yet, here they all were working together for a common purpose. Working together for America. This is not only the story of the people in North Platte, this is a story about the men they fed. It is also about what those Nebraskans meant to those soldiers, then and now. This author, Bob Greene, traveled around the country and interviewed many of the men that were on those troop trains that stopped in North Platte.
