Our labor isn’t just the work we do to make a living when we dedicate everything we do to God’s glory. Brother Lawrence, a lay brother serving in the Discalced Carmelite Priory in Paris where he served in the kitchen and he said, “I forgot myself and was willing to lose himself for God.” Consider what motivates you in work, in service, in washing dishes.
Celebrating Labor Day, for most Americans, has come to mean a three-day weekend; celebrating the vestiges of summer and one last picnic before winter. Labor Day parades have shrunk or become historical oddities. It’s good to rest from labor, it’s good to take a break but let’s not just party, let’s consider why we do the work we do. It’s often about earning a living to care for our loved ones, sometimes doing something good for our loved ones (like washing the dishes for them or doing the laundry), or serving a meal to the homeless, caring for someone in the hospital, or taking a meal to someone homebound or recovering. Do we do it for the thanks we receive or just the paycheck? Do we do it because it makes us feel good? Do we do it because it just needs to be done? All are good reasons. Perhaps above those reasons is, “We do it because God is glorified, he is greater, I am less. God is revealed in the manner and way that we do our work.”
