September 5, 2021 – 8:00AM Service – Just Do It: 1. Taming the Tongue

Today’s scripture:  James 1: 19-20; 3: 2-12

James is an action-oriented, practically focused little book of wisdom in the New Testament. Using the Nike tagline of “Just Do It” we’ll look in this series at practical steps for actively living our faith, starting with ways we can be quick to listen. Our often uncivil society urges us all to spout off, to strike first with words and pick up the pieces later. We’ll talk on how God helps us to restrain our words and anger so that our speech can do more to build people up and not tear others down or relationships apart.

The power and danger of our tongues and our words that can so easily do damage or convey our lack of interest in what someone is deeply trying to tell us. Being attentive is a loving skill.

The need to listen deeply, with compassion, seeking understanding of one another. Let’s be cautious with our words but eager to listen and care.

Listen first and foremost.  Don’t let angry words get the best of us or ruin friendships and conversation. Let our words help to de-escalate tensions and build up the faith of others.
