Heifer Update for September 2020

Heifer_001
Weekly Update – 8-31

HeiferArcThe goats have been so excited this past month, (As have I).  The matching of your gifts by Heifer International have been outstanding.  The last Flock of Chicks was matched, making 67 Flocks out of 112 matched. Then the big one, the Gift of The Ark was also matched.

Your donations this past month have also been outstanding, 4 Irrigation Pumps and 1 “Gift of Water for Life”.  In Africa’s    Sahel Region, it rains only 4 months during the year. Families wake well before dawn and travel long distances to haul water back home.  This chore is typically left to women and young girls, which keeps them from going to school.  Often the water they find is unsafe and   unsanitary.  Heifer International is changing that by building solar powered wells that bring life sustaining water right to families own backyards.  The “Water for Life” brings life giving water to those in need.

It’s like a prelude to God’s promise to us in Revelation 21:6b. “To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life”.

Weekly Update – 8-24

Heifer_1001Most of us, (if not all) have dealt with Covid-19 in some way or another. The same is true around the world. Let’s take a look at Bangladesh. The government there declared a country-wide holiday and lockdown from March 26 through May 30. Then issued an order against overall activities and movement restrictions until August 3. The lives of many people were negatively impacted. The prices of their products fell. Especially milk and dairy products. The country will have 16.4 million people nearly living in poverty in 2020.

In 2014 Heifer International helped develop two co-ops in Bangladesh. Today, those co-ops are helping their 600 members by providing rice, lentils, cooking oil and soap to each member. Afroza Begum, the president of one co-op says “Heifers 12 cornerstones taught us to care for other people in need, we feel proud to provide support to our members.”

In Proverbs 19:17 we read “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.”

Weekly Update – 8-17

July 26, 2020 Heifer Update-2Regina Mambwe used to travel on foot every morning to draw water from a stream in Zambia that was so dirty. It often made them sick. Today she and her family have a water kiosk next to their house.

Everyday, before and after school, 10 year old Khardiata Alassane Ba and her mother searched for water. It’s scarce in their village of Naicara, Senegal, which can sometimes go eight months without rain. But Khardiata’s daily routine is about to change dramatically. With support, such as LUMC gives, Heifer is constructing a solar-powered well, that will draw water from deep underground. Soon she will have the “Gift of Water for Life.” Clean water for the families, their livestock and their crops.

“Water for Life” – doesn’t that have a powerful message for girls like Regina and Khardiata.

Weekly Update – 8-10

Last week you donated the first Irrigation Pump. Delivering water to those valuable crops and gardens, that will help feed humans as well as animals.

I found a couple of statistics about water. Water, by means of rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans covers about 71% of the earth’s surface. And, about 70% of the fresh water used by humans goes to agriculture. Yet, it is estimated that approximately 844 million people world wide are without access to clean water.

The Irrigation Pump is an easy way for farmers to water crops. It costs less than a motorized pump and is more efficient than fetching water from faraway streams and ponds.

Help us bring more water to plants and vegetables with Irrigation Pumps.

Weekly Update – 8-3

Heifer060120Flock Sale – #2 is in the books.  We finished with 112 Flocks and 67 of them were matched by Heifer International.  That is a 59.8% match.  A wonderful way to end a project.  The LUMM thanks everyone for their strong support.

The other item I want to talk about is the Gift Ark that was donated on June 30, 2020.  It too, was matched by Heifer.  That turned the 28 Animals or Groups of Animals into 56.  Plus 2 Community Animal Vet Kits.  These two events combined will change many lives.  Most likely, even save some.  Now our efforts have turned to Water – the Drink of Life.  Join us in our effort to supply “irrigation Pumps” and “Water For Life.”
