Donna says, “The people here are great. I loved the fellowship and we have fun working out together. We look forward to coming each week because Dr. Woods makes it enjoyable.”
Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide. Each year an estimated 646,000 individuals die from falls globally. Adults older than 65 years of age suffer the greatest number of fatal falls.
(World Health Organization, Jan 16, 2018)
The National Council on Aging States:
- One in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year.
- Every 11 seconds, an Older Adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall;
- Every 19 minutes, an Older Adult dies from a fall.
- Falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults.
Falls, with or without injury, also carry a heavy quality of life impact. A growing number of older adults fear falling and, as a result, limit their activities and social engagements. This can result in further physical decline, depression, social isolation, and feelings of helplessness.
However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based falls prevention programs, and clinical-community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.
The purpose of the Lakeview UMC Fall Prevention/Chair Fitness class is to serve the community by helping older adults to strengthen their bodies and prevent some of the needless deaths that occur in our community. This class also serves as a rehab for those who have fallen and need support in their recovery.
