Mark 14:26-30 – New Revised Standard Version
26 When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 “But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.”
29 Peter said to him, “Even though all fall away, I will not.”
30 Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
Luke 22:54-62 – New Revised Standard Version
54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house. But Peter was following at a distance.
55 When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
56 Then a female servant, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, “This man also was with him.”
57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.”
58 A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
59 Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, “Surely this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed.
61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.”
62 And he went out and wept bitterly.
Today we look at Peter, a complex character, the de facto leader of the disciples, the first to leave everything and follow Jesus. Peter first sees Jesus as the messiah and Jesus see Peter as the “rock” on which to build the church. Peter promises to be faithful. Jesus says you will deny me 3 times.
Let us know what you would like to sing in Worship this summer!
