It is ourselves that we must spread under Christ’s feet, not coats or lifeless branches or shoots of trees… “But we have clothed ourselves with Christ’s grace, with the whole Christ – for as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” – so let us spread ourselves like coats under his feet. ~Andrew of Crete, 8th Century

Luke 19:29-40 – New Revised Standard Version

29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,

30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”

32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them.

33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”

34 They said, “The Lord needs it.”

35 Then they brought it to Jesus, and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road.

37 Now as he was approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen,

38 saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!”

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.”

40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

Luke 23:32-43 – New Revised Standard Version

32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.

33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing.

35 And the people stood by watching, but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!”

36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine

37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!”

38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.”

39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?

41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.”

42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.”

43 He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Good thief faces himself, what he has done & faces Jesus. He Confessed his sins, pleads for Js help, forgiveness, care. Like him we want to be loved despite our weaknesses and to love others despite theirs. Jesus gives us a love that cannot be bought or sold. A love that is permanent and immutable, unconditional.
