Lakeview Committees, Groups and Caring Ministries

Committees:

Administrative Council
Has the responsibility for the administration and programs of the church.  All areas of concern are represented by the members who are actually chairpersons of the committees listed in this brochure.  The Council meets on the third Monday of each month (except for June, July and August).  It has authority to initiate planning, establish objectives, adopt goals & resolutions, authorize action, determine policy, receive reports, evaluates the church’s ministries and reviews the mission and ministry of the church.  It is responsible for choosing chairpersons of the various church committees.

Attendance
A group of volunteers that meets every Monday morning to sort and alphabetize the attendance slips signed at the two church services. These names are then recorded on a computer. This helps the ministers in their visitations and checking on extended absences of members.

Audio Visual Ministry
As you are aware, we use more audio and visual in church presentations.   A trained professional records the regular worship service.  If you have an interest in power point or audio recording this may be just the volunteer ministry for you.

Board of Trustees
Supervises and cares for all property owned by the Church. It receives and administers bequests and trusts. Permission for usage of facilities is by direction of the Board.

Choir - Bell Choir - Music
Our Choir is composed of men and women who enjoy singing. Inquires are invited. Practice is from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday afternoons and Thursday evenings at 5pm. The choir sings for both morning services under the direction of a professional director and organist. Musical performances have always been a strong part of the history of Lakeview. This has been possible because of dedicated and committed people.

Church Decoration
Has the responsibility of providing materials used for the Christmas Season in decorating Smoot Hall. The committee uses different themes each year with originality in the placement of lights, wreaths and other seasonal items.

Church and Society Commission
This group attempts to help various community agencies and welfare organizations that provide food, clothing and services to needy people in the surrounding area. Its main thrust is through a designated “Share Sunday,” the second Sunday of each month.
Contributions of package food and non-budgeted funds are distributed to appropriate welfare groups such as the Westside Food Bank. Cash donations are used to help UMOM, Wesley Community Center, Methodist Kids Summer Camp, the Ministers Good Samaritan Fund and others.

Communion
This committee prepares the communion table in a beautiful and reverent manner. Open communion is observed at Lakeview the first Sunday of every month.

Finance
This Committee is responsible for preparing a workable budget that the church can use as a guide for fiscal responsibility. It has the responsibility of determining that all financial matters of the Church are adequately handled. It is involved with banking of receipts, payment of bills and provides a monthly financial report to the Administrative Board.

Greeters
Two Greeters are scheduled to be at the Sanctuary door at each Worship Service for a period of two weeks each, except for the five Sunday months, when there are two and three week Greeters. Breaking months into two parts is due to age and health reasons. If you would be willing to greet and meet other members and make new friends contact the church office.

Historian
A Historian is appointed to insure the preservation of important historical documents of the Church. This is an important part of the church’s ministry as records are kept, development of an archive, and service given for Christ.

Lay Delegates
Elected Lay Delegates serve as voting members from the church congregation to the Desert Southwest Annual Conference.

Lay Leaders Ministry
Church Lay Leaders serve as a liaison between the Senior Pastor and the congregation. In this capacity they participate in the official meetings of the various committees of the church’s operation. Its goal is to support the Pastoral staff in all missions of the church ongoing and new ones, to be a sounding board for ideas and suggestions from the congregation and generally enhance the love and nurturing in the Church.

Library
The Library is located just off Fellowship Hall, and is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and on Sunday mornings. Committee members serve in the library on Tuesday a.m., Friday p.m., and between services on Sunday. At other times, books circulate on the honor system, with self check out. On the 4th Sunday of the month, a cart containing a representative group of materials is available in Smoot Hall between services.

Lakeview’s Library is a ministry of the church and the Library Committee seeks to provide books and other media to support the teaching, preaching, counseling and evangelistic ministries of the congregation. The collection is intended to aid members and friends in their spiritual development, in living their faith in the community and world today, in serving effectively in the life of the congregation, and in wholesome use of leisure time for enrichment of their lives. Books in many categories, Audio books, Videos, and DVD’s are available for checkout. New books, audios, and videos may be borrowed for two-week periods, and all others for 4 weeks. They may be renewed if requested.

LUM Foundation
The Lakeview United Methodist Foundation was chartered in 1984 and incorporated separately from the Church in 1994, as a 501(c) Foundation for charitable, educational and religious purposes not included in the church budget. Members of the Board include nine lay persons and the Senior Pastor. Voluntary donations and gift annuities are vital to reach its minimum goal of $1-million necessary to support the Church’s Caring Ministry.

Marketing
The Marketing Committee’s objective is two way communication within and outside of the church through such methods as the monthly “Lakeviewer” and the Sunday Bulletin, church signage, banners, articles in the Arizona Republic, Daily News-Sun, Independent, Glendale Star, Peoria Times newspapers and the Luke Tali-Ho. The Lakeview Web Site (www.lakeviewumc.net) is in operation and updated on a regular basis.

Membership - Church Growth
The goal of this committee is to welcome visitors, new members and regular members to worship services and help to continue keeping this church a “friendly church.” The committee is composed of dedicated church members who willingly give many hours to help the church grow in Christian Love and the knowledge of God’s grace; to make disciples of all people. You can spot committee members during a church service or Smoot Hall fellowship “hour” as they wear identifying yellow ribbons.

Memorials and Gifts
This committee is delegated responsibility from the Board of Trustees to handle and administer the receipt or rejection of all bequests, memorials, donations gifts and grants.

Missions
The purpose of the Missions Committee is to guide the Missionary outreach of the congregation in the selection of missionary projects requiring support; to set up a budget for these projects; to educate our congregation on all phases of missions with films, conferences, programs and speakers and to host missionary programs and speakers.

Nursery
Surprisingly, the church does have a nursery which is in operation during Sunday worship services. Volunteers are welcome to help with this humanitarian service.

Office Volunteers
Volunteers are often needed to help the office receptionist welcome desk and phones, help with folding and mailing newsletters, help with the signup books on a Monday morning routine and other miscellaneous duties not covered by the regular office staff.

Staff Parish Relations
This committee is the liaison between church membership and the church staff. It recommends the employment of office and custodial staff and recommends salaries for each staff person to the Finance Committee. It sets the policy and duties of staff members.

Stewardship
This committee works toward educating church members of the true definition of stewardship, supporting the Fall pledge campaign, involvement in procuring new members and participating in special events. They see the need for church members to be educated on the various missions and ministries the church supports and encourages participation with time, talent and resources.

Ushers
The duty of the ushers is to work as a team and see that all worshipers are properly greeted and seated just before worship services. They take the offering and serve monthly communion. Volunteers are always needed.

Caring Ministries:

Amigos
A ministry which has no officers, no dues, no budget, no scheduled meetings, no solicitations for membership and no entrance requirements, except to want to be a friend when and where needed.  We serve the niche not served by the Caring Committee, Hi-Neighbor group or Stephen Ministry.

Bus Ministry
A permanent bus driver is available to transport individuals to and from Sunday worship services. Many individuals assist our members on and off the bus weekly.

Care Center Friends
A group of dedicated individuals who bring the sunshine of God’s love and concern to our members living in care facilities. Volunteers make two to three visits per month to thirty different Care Centers from Surprise to Phoenix.

Caring Coordinator
Receives referrals for assistance from caring ministry volunteers, pastors, hospital staff, church members and friends. Each week, as requested, counseling is provided for housing, home care, caregiver respite and dementia related problems. Weekly training classes are held for Stephen Ministry. Bereavement or Grief Classes are conducted weekly. In-home visitations are made to homes of some members each week, as resources and information is needed to obtain assistance.

Doc's Hangout

This is a social club for those in early Alzheimer's, dementia, or physical disability to enable them to participate in an entertaining afternoon and allow the spouses to have personal time.  Volunteers need to be patient, caring, loving and humorous, and want to make a true difference in these lives.

Health and Welfare
This committee’s mission is to nurture health, wellness and healing in the congregation and community. This is done by monitoring emergency procedures and equipment, support of Interfaith and other human services the offering of wellness seminars, exercise classes; support groups for fribromyalgia, persons who have adult children with addictions and/or mental health problems, a workshop in grief and bereavement and the offering of writing classes. Personal consultation is conducted with church members, as requested, regarding personal and health issues. The committee also participates in other Caring Ministry programs of the church.
Objectives of this ministry are to promote friendliness among church members. This is accomplished by neighborhood get-togethers. Sun City is divided into areas with Neighborhood Captains and area Chairpersons. A breakfast, brunch, lunch, picnic or a pot-luck meal is often conducted in or for each area. Another objective is to give aid in time of serious illness or bereavement of neighbors.

Phone Shepherds
These volunteers make regular telephone calls to members who request a friendly phone call at least once a month. If nothing more, they make a connection with the church and members who cannot make it to a worship service or are ill. These contacts provide friendship and information to fight loneliness and isolation. If a problem is found to exist, word is passed on to the Caring Coordinator for a visitation of a Stephen Minister or pastor.

Stephen Ministry
Stephen Ministers represent the foundation on which more intensive care giving is provided for our members experiencing problem situations. Each Stephen Minister has attended 50 hours of classes and has ongoing monthly support supervision and continuing education meetings. Stephen Ministers are assigned one care receiver whom they visit weekly to offer Christian support and care as well as serve communion.
